About
our winefarm | THE
PAST
Hoopenburg has its origins some 290 years ago. In 1714
Johannes Mulder, the first landdrost (magistrate) of Stellenbosch,
was granted 61 morgen (approx 71 hectares) of land named
Hopenburg. Hopenburg was the original name of the farm
more commonly described as “Hopenberg op de Muldersvlei”.
Hopenburg was placed well and truly on the map by Christiaan
Frederick Beyers in 1814 when he planted the first noticeable
vines. In the census of 1819, it is noted, that he produced
125 leaguers (approx 72 250 litres) of wine from his 150
000 vines. Through the years Hopenburg passed from owner
to owner and eventually evolved into Hoopenburg.
About our winefarm | THE
PRESENT
Hoopenburg is over 80 hectares in size with 40 hectares
under environmentally friendly grape production. As you
would expect with such a moderate climate 25% of the cultivars
are white grapes while the remaining 75% are red grapes.
Hoopenburg is perfectly positioned on the slopes of the
majestic Simonsberg mountain range, which forms the dramatic
backdrop to the farm. From the slopes there is a clear
and panoramic view of Table Mountain adding to the tranquility
of the setting.
Hoopenburg was upgraded in 1992 to a functional Boutique
winery with vineyards planted with noble cultivars, Chardonnay,
Pinot Noir, Shiraz, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Nourished
by pure underground springs, our unique bush vines produce
wines of exceptional taste. The moderate climate combined
with the deep red soils, create ideal conditions for cultivating
grapes of the highest quality. This combination, together
with the micro climate, is ideally suited to supply premium
quality wines, much sought after in Europe and the rest
of the world.
The farm is situated on arguably the most famous wine
route (Stellenbosch) in South Africa and is only 30 minutes
from Cape Town. In our wine tasting center you are welcome
to taste or buy our fine wines while you sit overlooking
the vineyards and gardens and enjoy the quiet tranquillity.
Hoopenburg has enjoyed prominent coverage in the South
African media for its achievements on the local and international
wine scene. From the outset Hoopenburg established itself
as one of the Cape's foremost boutique wineries, with
wines gaining a widespread reputation for high quality
and excellent taste. Our philosophy is simple, “we
produce new age wines in an old world style”. Our
integrated textured wine is accessible and fruity, harvested
from our immaculate vineyards. We also pride ourselves
in our ability to deliver service through a customer centric
business approach.
Our Label
The label depicts the silhouette of two indigenous mountain
reedbuck (Redunca
arundinum), which were encountered on the farm
when the owners moved to Hoopenburg. These reedbucks can
also be seen grazing on the farm.
